Scenic Adventures for You and Your Pup—Right in Antrim County

Looking for the perfect way to explore Northern Michigan with your dog? Antrim County is home to some of the most peaceful and pet-friendly trails in the state—ideal for leashed walks, tail wags, and fresh northern air. Whether you’re a full-time resident or here for the weekend, these dog-friendly hiking spots near Bellaire are a must-explore.
At Northern Paws Pet Care, we love nothing more than giving pets a chance to connect with nature safely and joyfully. Here are our favorite local trails your dog will love.
🥾 1. Glacial Hills Pathway – Bellaire, MI
This is one of the most beloved hiking areas in Antrim County—and for good reason. With over 30 miles of winding, wooded trails, Glacial Hills offers varied terrain, scenic overlooks, and plenty of quiet corners for dogs to explore on leash. Trails range from easy loops to longer hikes for active dogs and humans.
Tip: Go early in the morning for peaceful, shaded walks and minimal trail traffic.
🌿 2. Grass River Natural Area – Bellaire, MI
Located just minutes from town, Grass River Natural Area is a gem for dogs and their people. This 1,500-acre preserve features 7 miles of well-maintained trails, including boardwalks, river views, and wetland habitats. It’s a calmer walk perfect for older dogs, smaller breeds, or gentle adventures.
Note: Dogs must remain leashed at all times, and waste stations are available.
🌲 3. Coy Mountain Trail – Alden, MI
A quiet, lesser-known trail tucked behind downtown Alden, Coy Mountain Trail features a short, shady loop with moderate elevation changes and rustic forest charm. Though only about 1 mile, it’s a great quick outing for pups who love sniffing through old-growth hardwoods.
Bonus: Walk into Alden after your hike for a treat or lake view!
🏞️ 4. Barnes Park Trails – Eastport, MI
Located along Lake Michigan, Barnes Park offers a gorgeous forested trail loop that connects to the campground and beach area. While dogs aren’t allowed on the swimming beach, they’re welcome on leash throughout the trails and campgrounds. It’s a great option for families camping with pets or looking for a low-key beachside hike.
🐾 Trail Tips for Pet Parents
To keep these spaces dog-friendly for years to come:
Keep pets leashed at all times
Pick up and properly dispose of waste
Bring plenty of fresh water
